Google G-suite gratis per le scuole sino il 30 settembre? Vediamo cosa cambia e perchè

Fa discutere la scadenza di cui si parla nelle scuole che adottano G-suite circa i limiti. Pare che a partire dal 1 ottobre 2020 alcune funzionalità a cui siamo abituati, non saranno più disponibili.

Per capire cosa accade occorre partire dalla differenza tra le due versioni di G-suite, base e Enterprise. Questo link spiega in maniera non molto chiara le differenze per ciò che attiene l’utenza aziendale ma lo stesso vale per le scuole, ovvero esse potranno avere la versione base come gratuita ma le funzioni della versione Enterprise scadranno… A quest’altro link trovate forse informazioni più chiare per l’utenza Educational ma sui prezzi per la versione Enterprise c’è tanto fumo, occorre chiedere…

Vediamo intanto quali sono quelle funzionalità utilizzate in massa durante il lockdown e a cui dovremo purtroppo rinunciare.

Google Meet per gruppi di persone fino a 250. Il limite è posto per la versione più performante. Dal 1 ottobre questa applicazione passa a 100 utenti al massimo. Scordatevi quindi i collegi dei docenti su google Meet a meno che non cambino idea. Per le lezioni di didattica a distanza invece lo strumento continua ed essere valido visto che avremo a che fare con non più+ di 25-30 persone.
Registrazione delle videoconferenze. Sarnano ancora possibili ma esse verranno tenute in memoria per soli 30 giorni. Le lezioni on line che eventualmente verranno registrate, verranno cancellate dopo 30 giorni. Con qualche azione preventiva, possiamo conservare altrove le registrazioni ma la comodità che ci viene offerta ci darà sicuramente delle sorprese e quando cercheremo le registrazioni il 1 novembre non le troveremo e ci ricorderemo che forse avremmo dovuto conservarle prima altrove.

Svariate altre funzionalità che riguardano la ricerca interna, la sicurezza e altre funzioni minori che sicuramente sono interessanti a livello aziendale ma lo sono meno a livello scolastico.

In questi giorni molte scuole stanno ricevendo una mail in inglese che le informa della scadenza e le invita ad un upgrade alla versione Enterprise attraverso una richiesta di informazione. Non c’è alcuna traccia di prezzo. L’unica cosa che sappiamo è che la versione Enterprise per aziende costa € 23,00 per utente al mese. Se la scuola è composta da almeno 1000 utenti, fate un po’ voi i conti per un intero anno scolastico.

We’re writing to let you know that the free promotional period for access to larger meetings and live streaming in Google Meet will be concluding on September 30, 2020. However, meetings recorded during the promotional period will remain in the respective owner’s Drive.

To help schools and classrooms stay connected, earlier this year we enabled advanced Google Meet features, typically only available in G Suite Enterprise for Education, for all global G Suite for Education customers for free through September 30, 2020. These premium features included:

Larger meetings for up to 250 participants
Live streaming for up to 100K viewers within your domain
Record meetings to Google Drive to share with those who can’t attend

To extend access to class material, we will continue to offer free premium recordings until a new temporary recordings feature is available later this year for all G Suite for Education customers, at which time the premium recordings feature, offered as part of the original Meet promotion, will only be available for G Suite Enterprise for Education customers.

What does this mean for my institution?

Beginning October 1, 2020, if your domain does not have G Suite Enterprise for Education, you will revert back to the standard G Suite for Education Meet capabilities:

Meetings up to 100 participants
No live streaming
Dial-in access to meetings (US only)
Closed Captioning, viewer initiated

What are temporary recordings?

With temporary recordings, a new free feature coming to G Suite for Education, any meeting host will be able to record a meeting and share the recording within their domain for up to 30 days before the video expires. Given disparities in internet access, temporary recordings are intended to help meeting participants replay a class or meeting they couldn’t attend live. Temporary recordings can’t be shared outside the host’s domain or downloaded. G Suite Enterprise for Education customers will have continued access to premium recordings.

What do I need to do?

If you’d like to continue using full advanced Meet functionality beyond September 30, 2020, contact a specialist to help you upgrade to the G Suite Enterprise for Education edition.
If you’d like a free trial G Suite Enterprise for Education before you purchase, you can enable a 30-day trial in your Admin Console by navigating to Billing > Get More Services in the left-hand navigation options.
If you do not take action, starting October 1, 2020, Google Meet functionality for larger meetings and live streaming will revert back to the original functionality associated with the G Suite edition that your institution is currently using. We suggest notifying your users of these changes in case they have live streams scheduled or planned for a later date.

No, we’re extending access to premium recordings until temporary recordings are available to all Education users.

What does this mean for G Suite Enterprise for Education users?

Any user with a G Suite Enterprise for Education license will maintain access to unlimited, premium recordings. However, if a domain has a limited number of G Suite Enterprise for Education licenses, educators without a license will only have access to premium recordings until temporary recordings are released, at which point they will move over to temporary recording functionality.

When will temporary recordings be available?

While we don’t have an exact timeline, we’re aiming to launch temporary recordings to all Education users by the end of 2020. We’ll let you know before the feature is released.
